What is Breast Implant Surgery?

Breast Implant Surgery, or Boob Job or Breast Augmentation Surgery, is performed to give women fuller and more rounded breasts. It is popular among women who have lost breast volume because of weight loss or after childbirth and breast feeding. It is also performed for breast cancer patients who have undergone mastectomy surgery, to reconstruct their breasts.

How is Breast Implant Surgery done?

Breast Implant Surgery is performed either by a fat transfer procedure to increase the volume of breasts or by making incisions and inserting silicone gel or saline filled implants to increase the size of breasts. Depending on the patient's requirements they can be inserted above or underneath the muscle tissue of the breast and be inserted through incisions made underneath the breast or under the armpit. I had Alarplasty procedure at the Harley Plastic Surgery in East Grinstead. On assessment, Mr Harley took time to explained the procedure and realistic expected outcome. I was a bit disappointed that there was no before and after photos of Afro Caribbean patient in his archives. Nevertheless, I was pretty sure that I have chosen the right Surgeon as evidence by his procedures videos and reviews. During the procedure, he was very caring and meticulous with his technique, ensuring that I was pain free and comfortable. The outcome has really enhanced my profile, boosts my confidence and self esteem. Though, the scar is still visible after 4 weeks but I am pretty sure that it will be inconspicuous when matured. I am so grateful to Mr Harley for arranging post op follow up appointment to monitor my progress.

Does Breast Implant Surgery require a general anaesthetic or hospitalisation? Breast Implant Surgery is usually a 1-night-stay or a day-case operation which is carried out under general anaesthetic. What are my options for the type of implants? Various types of Breast Implants are available and the optimum implant for you will depend on your goals and existing size and shape. Breast implant types are Silicone or Saline filled, round or teardrop shaped and can be low, medium, high or extra high profile in order to achieve the best aesthetic natural result. There are differences in the outer layer of implants also. I usually use Motiva or Mentor implants which ahve a good safety and manufacturing record. Where will the implants be placed in Breast Augmentation Surgery? Breast implants can usually be placed directly behind the breast tissue. If the breast tissue is thin over the upper part of the breast then it may be preferable to place the implant more deeply, under the pectoral muscle. In either position, what you will see and feel is your own breast tissue. The goal is to achieve the optimum natural appearance of your breasts. How long is the recovery time? Most patients report that their surgery was much less painful than they expected. Moderate pain / discomfort is expected for 3 – 5 days. You may return to your normal daily activities the next day if you feel ready and comfortable to do so. You should however avoid strenuous exercise / activity for 6 weeks. It will be necessary to wear a support bra for the first 3 weeks, day and night and the second 3 weeks during the day. The majority of swelling will resolve in 2 – 3 weeks but it will take up to 3 months for the breast to return to normal feel.

If I could give the Centre for Surgery a million stars I would! The whole process from the phone call, consultation and surgery itself was absolutely seamless and couldn’t gone better. Coming from someone with a severe needle phobia and not feeling comfortable in a medical setting I felt so comfortable from start to finish. I had an Otoplasty with Dr Michail Vourvachis today and yet I don’t feel any pain and feel like my normal self. All the nurses, reception team and anaesthetists were so kind, caring and attentive especially given that I was so nervous. Dr Michail Vourvachis truly is a one-of-a-kind surgeon, with incredible attention to detail and incredible at calming me down for my procedure. In my initial consultation, he explained absolutely everything I needed to know and I had no questions as he had already answered them all. He is not only an expert in what he does but he is such a kind and caring person who will help put anyone at ease. A huge shoutout to the nurses who were there by my side throughout the whole process. I was so anxious and yet they are all so kind and looked after me so well. And a massive shoutout to the anaesthetist who calmed me down and made me laugh. Thank you so much to the reception team for answering all my questions and being so kind and informative! I’m one of those people who are quite difficult to calm down when I’m anxious and yet everyone genuinely calmed me down and made me feel reassured and looked after. They really did go above and beyond! I have my check-up consultation next week but I couldn’t help to write a review immediately because of how perfect the whole process has been. I’ve had other consultations previously from Harley Street and nothing has come close to how incredible the whole team are here. For many years, I have always been unhappy with the appearance and feel of my breasts and have, on many occasions, considered getting implants in order to boost my confidence. I am due to get married in July 2024 and knowing how important it is for me to feel good in my dress, my partner asked whether I wanted to consider having breast surgery. My partner doesn’t like the feel of implants so I initially carried out research into a fat transfer procedure to (hopefully) allow me have the breasts I longed for as well as keep the feel as natural as possible. I found Professor Mahajan worked from a private hospital close to where I live and was able to arrange a consultation to discuss my options. I explained my concerns about the naturalness of the breasts after a procedure and after an examination, Professor Mahajan was able to recommend to my that I had a breast uplift rather than implants. My breasts still contained enough fat and tissue that this would be possible. It was not something I had considered and immediately felt better that both myself and my partner would get what we wanted. I undertook the procedure in March 2024 at Spire Hospital, in Elland and I am so glad I did. I am thoroughly pleased with how they look and sit and, for the first time in years, I was able to wear an outfit for my birthday without having to stuff my breasts in a bra. I also had my first dress fitting recently and they look amazing in my dress and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle. The treatment is great. Professor Mahajan is incredibly knowledgeable and very professional and friendly, putting me completely at ease (it’s the first time I’ve ever had surgery) and I would 100% recommend Professor Mahajan to anyone wanting to undertake cosmetic surgery. If I choose to have more surgery in the future, Professor Mahajan will be my number one choice – I wish I’d done it sooner!
