What is dental implant? Placing a bridge after teeth have been lost can prevent a chain reaction of problems that could affect your entire mouth. Teeth need each other for support, and when a tooth is lost, the biting forces change on the teeth next to the space, causing them to shift. When a tooth on the opposite arch no longer has anything to chew against, it begins to extrude out of the socket. You can eventually end up losing it too.As your bite changes, it gets harder and harder to chew your food and your jaw joint, the TMJ, may be damaged. It's also much harder to clean teeth that have shifted. Harmful plaque and tartar collect in these new hard-to-reach places, causing cavities and the permanent bone loss that comes with gum disease. When you have missing teeth, your overall health can be affected because of poor nutrition. The people who have missing teeth cannot chew very well and they cannot eat every kind of food. And also loss of teeth can change way of bite and this can lead to problems with the jaw joint which is called the temporomandibular joint. In the broadest sense, periodontal disease can be considered any form of disease affecting the periodontium - the tissues that surround and support the teeth. Inflammation of the bone is called periodontitis. The periodontium also includes the gums (or gingiva), the bone of the tooth socket, and the periodontal ligament - a thin layer of connective tissue that holds the tooth in its socket and acts as a cushion between tooth and bone. Inflammation or infection of the gums is called gingivitis. If allowed to progress, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis, the invasion and destruction of the underlying bone that anchors the teeth in place. As that happens, the gums may recede, exposing the root surfaces and increasing sensitivity to heat and cold. Teeth may even loosen because of bone destruction. In the earlier stages of the disease, most of the treatment involves root planing and curettage (cleaning) under the gum margins. It involves the removal of plaque and inflamed soft tissue in the pockets around the tooth with an instrument called a curette. Its purpose is to remove the bacterial colonies and the mechanical and chemical irritants that cause inflammation in hopes that the disease can be eradicated. The goal is that the gum will reattach itself to the tooth or will shrink enough to eliminate the pocket.In most early cases, root planing, curettage, and proper daily plaque removal are all that are required for a satisfactory result.

--per implant--- A dental implant is a "root" device, usually made of titanium, used in dentistry to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth to replace missing teeth. The first stage of implantation requires the implantologist to assess factors (eg. bone levels, medical conditions) which will decide whether the patient is a good candidate for implants (assessed with panoramic x-rays).If implants are viable, the implantologist will proceed to insert the implant/s into the jaw/s, suture(stitch) the area/s up and the patient will be re-called for a check-up appointment +- 6 months later. These 6 months are vital because the bone fuses to the implant giving it the best support/strength, the soft tissue (gums) are also healed in the area of implantation and the sutures keep the implants free of bacteria. The next stage is started whereby the patient returns after the +- 6 months and the crown/s (the visible part of the tooth) are prepared which will be constructed at a dental lab by dental technicians. The dentist will place temporary crowns on the implant/s abutments (the extension that protrudes out of the gum where the crowns will be fixed to the implant) so that the patient will have use of that area, the implants will be protected and for aesthetic appeal. The patient will then be re-called and the final permanent crowns will be placed.Please note: if you have many teeth missing in an area, this will normally not require you to have implants for every single tooth. For single or double tooth loss in one area-you will need individual implants but 3 or more in one area will require less implants.
