Inlays resemble fillings in function - they both serve to fill the space which remains after removing the decayed portion. The difference between them is the fact that inlays are shaped outside the patient's mouth and then cemented into the empty area. A wax pattern of that area is made which serves to cast a mold. An inlay is made from such a mold and it is implemented into the tooth by using dental cement. Advantages of inlays refer to a greater duration than amalgam fillings, despite the short process of preparing the tooth. It is necessary to mention the fact that inlays are only for the cases when the damage is at the surface and it does not affect the entire tooth or the root. Embedding inlays take several steps, like taking impressions, placing a temporary inlay, then replacing it by a permanent one, re-adjusting the inlay for assured quality. Outlays are dental devices used by surgeons to restore, protect and reinforce teeth remedying damaged teeth is a high priority and onlays are handy procedures and one of the most used devices by dentists. Although functionally similar to other traditional restoration treatments like crowns or bridges, there are certain features which make a difference. For example, they do not weaken the structure of the tooth but instead strengthen it and provide support for the cracked or fractured tooth. Another characteristic is that outlays are built directly from the patient’s tooth material; they are made in laboratories and linked to the denture afterwards. There is no recorded case of allergical reaction to zirconium-oxide in scientific references and literature. Its interaction with other metals used in dentistry can be actually ruled out.

An inlay is a dental restoration that can be made from gold, resin, or porcelain. They are stronger than composite fillings, and more conservative than crowns since less natural tooth is required to be removed during the treatment. Since the margins are invisible, it does not need to be placed below the gum line, which is healthier and easier on the gums. They are bonded to the teeth to create a tight fit and restore the tooth’s strength. Porcelain inlays wear better than composite fillings, and are usually less expensive than crowns.
