What is a Panoramic X-Ray?

A panoramic X-ray is an X–ray machine that takes a two dimensional image of the entire mouth. It is quicker to take than a traditional dental X-ray and the image is clearer. A dentist can diagnose a range of problems by viewing one image.

How is a Panoramic X-Ray performed?

Patients will be asked to stand or sit against the machine and bites a plastic blade. The machine moves around the skull of the patient to take a comprehensive image of the jaws of the patient.

Is taking a Panoramic X-Ray image painful?

Patients will not experience any pain or discomfort when a panoramic X-ray image is taken.

What does a Panoramic X-Ray show?

Panoramic X-rays show cavities, infections, tumours including bone tumours, cysts, wisdom teeth, jaw lesions, gum lesions, tooth misalignment and fractures.

Are Panoramic X-Rays safe?

Panoramic X-rays are safe and use a very small amount of radiation. The patient is subjected to 40 percent less radiation than a traditional dental X-ray. It helps dentists diagnose problems in a single image. There is no need to take repeated X-rays. This makes it a safe imaging instrument.  It is also easy to disinfect a panoramic X-ray machine after each imaging procedure. Panoramic X-ray images should not be taken of pregnant women.

Panoramic Dental X-Ray $40 - $50
The panoramic x-ray, or  as it was first called, is a wonderful modern invention. It has much less radiation than a traditional full set of eighteen (18) smaller x-rays and it much more comfortable for the patient to have taken. The panoramic x-ray can also be taken very quickly and is especially helpful when a patient is in pain.Typically, a panoramic x-ray should be taken every three (3) years and having a series of them on the same patient can assist the dentist in later determining whether changes seen in the panoramic x-ray are normal or not.
Dental X-Ray $10 - $60
Dental radiographs, commonly referred to as X-ray films, or informally, X-rays, are pictures of the teeth, bones, and surrounding soft tissues to screen for and help identify problems with the teeth, mouth, and jaw. X-ray pictures can show cavities, cancerous or benign masses, hidden dental structures (such as wisdom teeth), and bone loss that cannot be seen during a visual examination. Dental X-rays may also be done as follow-up after dental treatments.
Traditional Dental X-Ray $10 - $20
What are the benefits of a dental radiograph examination? Many diseases of the teeth and surrounding tissues cannot be seen during a routine visual examination of your mouth. An x-ray examination may reveal: small areas of decay between the teeth or below existing restorations (fillings)infections in the bone periodontal (gum) disease in the form of reduced bone levels around the teeth abscesses or cysts developmental abnormalitiessome types of tumors Finding and treating dental problems at an early stage can save time, money and unnecessary  discomfort. If you have a hidden tumor, radiographs may even help save your life. There are two types of radiographs that me taken: intra-oral and extra-oral. The intraoral x-rays are the most commonly known type that involve the placement of the small films inside the mouth, and provide the most detail andaccuracy of small areas at a time. The extraoral films are larger, and take a more overall view of the teeth and jaws. The most common extraoral film is the panoramic x-ray which is taken by a unit that spins around the patients head and  produces a complete survey of the teeth and upper & lower jawbones.

X-radiation (composed of X-rays) is a form of electromagnetic radiation. X-rays have a wavelength in the range of 0.01 to 10 nanometers, corresponding to frequencies in the range 30 petahertz to 30 exahertz (3×1016 Hz to 3×1019 Hz) and energies in the range 100 eV to 100 keV. They are shorter in wavelength than UV rays and longer than gamma rays. In many languages, X-radiation is called Röntgen radiation, after Wilhelm Röntgen, who is usually credited as its discoverer, and who had named it X-radiation to signify an unknown type of radiation
