Karen Fleming (M.A.Clinical Psychology & Community Counselling (US).

I am a HPCSA registered clinical psychologist practicing in Gardens, Cape Town. I work individually with adults who might be feeling overwhelmed or struggling to cope with difficulties that may be related to depression, anxiety and trauma.

I draw from either a Psychodynamic Perspective or from a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach, depending on the needs of the client. Each session is collaborative with a specific focus on holding struggle with compassion and on gaining new insights that can lead to constructive changes and an alleviation of distress.

STRUCTURE OF SESSIONS - Our sessions will last 50 minutes and typically take place weekly. Initially, there is a clinical assessment over two to three sessions and thereafter we will discuss a therapeutic plan moving forward.

BACKGROUND

  • Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology and Community Counselling (Cum Laude), University of Stellenbosch.
TRAINING
  • Two years in the Department of Health in Cape Town and the Northern Cape including: Red Cross Children’s Hospital Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Groote Schuur Hospital and Valkenberg Hospital.
  • Range: Family, child, adult, couple's therapy and group therapy facilitation.

As a Clinical Psychologist registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa, I offer individual therapy for children, adolescents and adults. I provide short and longer term therapy in Gardens, Cape Town. At the beginning of the therapeutic process, the first two to four sessions will allow me to gain a better understanding of your current concerns and background. Thereafter, we can discuss a therapeutic plan and potential referrals to other healthcare professionals.

CURRENT FOCUS AREASChildren and Parents:I offer therapeutic input that is developmentally appropriate and suited to the specific challenges that you and your child might be facing. As a parent, you will be asked to play an active role in the therapeutic process. Some of the challenges I work with include: Anxiety, Separation difficulties, Bereavement, Behavioural challenges and Adjusting to changes such as coping with the birth of sibling, parents' divorce or going to a new school.Adults:I provide short and longer term therapy for adults, predominantly drawing from psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. Some of my focus areas include Depression, Anxiety, Bereavement, Coping with life transitions such as adjusting to student life or managing relationship changes, Coping with physical health problems and adjusting to life affecting medical diagnoses, as well as Personal development.EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

I have provided Individual Therapy, Family Therapy and Group Therapy for both children and adults in the Department of Health at hospitals including Tygerberg Hospital and Stikland Hospital.
