Bad posture, poor technique in sports, sitting for long periods of time or bouts of activity that your body is not used to can all cause injury & pain.  Recurrent mild stiffness in the lower back or ‘sciatica’ type pain first thing in the morning is a symptom of a build up of ‘knots’ around the hips and lower back.  Starting a new exercise routine or stepping up the training creates tension in muscles which can develop into imbalances and musculo-skeletal injuries.  Common sporting injuries and chronic musculo-skeletal injuries are treated using various hands-on techniques and exercises specifically designed to help repair damage and strengthen and re-establish correct movement patterns.  Using knowledge of anatomy, neurology, biomechanics & exercise physiology the focus of treatment may not just be on the site of pain, but also on the movement (or lack of) in everyday life that causes or exaggerates the problem.

At the same time a past medical history will be taken with details of your current day to day lifestyle; this is all to get an idea of any potential underlying issues and regular activity patterns. This will be followed by an osteopathic examination. The osteopath will ask you to perform some gentle, simple movements whilst assessing muscle and joint quality to feel for any irregularities. Based on the information gathered in the examination the osteopath will arrive at a diagnosis. An explanation of the cause of the current problem will be provided and any remaining questions will be answered.  The osteopath will then proceed, with the patient's consent, to provide appropriate treatment.
