Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy Massage combines the use of essential oils with massage techniques. The oils are specifically chosen and blended according to the needs of the individual. Using massage helps to relax tense and aching muscles, and stimulates the lymphatic circulation to help eliminate toxins from the body. Massage also improves the circulation to the skin which aids the absorption of the oils. Receiving a massage from an experienced therapist can also have an effect on an emotional level.

Aromatherapy is generally a very safe and gentle treatment, but it is important to consult a qualified practitioner since some of the oils are not appropriate for use with young children, pregnant women or those with certain medical conditions such as epilepsy. The type of problems which respond well to Aromatherapy Massage include muscular tension and pain, stress related disorders, insomnia, headaches and digestive problems. Massage for Pregnancy is also available and can help with many problems such as constipation, sciatica, swollen ankles, and varicose veins.

For more information about Aromatherapy Massage or Massage for Pregnancy please contact Wendy Livingston at the Lismore Clinic.

Full Body Massage

Ms Eleanor McGrath - The Lismore Clinic

In Energetic Massage, the term ‘Energetic’ does not refer to the amount of energy used by the therapist during the massage, but to the action of treating the body on an ‘energetic’ level. This means addressing the mind, body and spirit as one in order to restore harmony. Pain and illness affect both the mind and body and therefore both need to be treated together. As well as a more conventional understanding of anatomy and physiology, the Energetic Massage Therapist is trained to identify tension and blockages in the body, and to help the person being massaged to relax using breathing techniques and the power of touch.

Energetic Massage Therapy is suitable for both men and women, and can aid relaxation, reduce stress and tension, and relieve muscle pain. Because massage therapy stimulates the circulation of blood and lymph it also detoxifies the body and nourishes and improves the skin. The types of problems which can benefit from Energetic Massage Therapy include not only physical problems such as headaches, insomnia and joint or muscle pain and stiffness, but also emotional issues such as sadness, anger and frustration.

A good massage therapist will always check that the person receiving the massage is comfortable with the amount of pressure being used. The parts of the body that are massaged include the back, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, legs and feet. A full body massage usually takes at least an hour, after which the person receiving the treatment experiences a profound sense of relaxation and well-being.

McTimoney Chiropractic

Mr Brian Livingston, McTimony Chiropractor - The Lismore Clinic

McTimoney Chiropractic was developed by a chiropractor called John McTimoney in the 1950s. He pioneered a new technique for adjusting the bones which consists of an extremely light, fast and usually painless movement. The adjustment encourages the bone to return to its correct alignment without forcing it or stressing the joint.

Like osteopathy and other forms of chiropractic, McTimony helps to correct misalignment of the joints due to injuries, awkward movements, strenuous exercise, overuse of certain joints or muscles, poor posture, or degenerative diseases such as arthritis. However, there is no violent manipulation involved and the treatment is suitable for people of all ages, including the elderly and very young children.

Joints that move out of their proper positions will often cause the surrounding muscles to go into spasm, and subsequently become irritated and inflamed, leading to pain and stiffness. Either the muscles or the misaligned bones themselves may also pinch the nerves or blood vessels in the surrounding areas, leading to problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica and migraines. McTimony Chiropractic can help to relieve problems affecting the muscles and other soft tissues around the joints, as well as misalignment of the bones themselves. It can be used to treat problems affecting any of the joints including the neck, back, shoulders, hips and knees.

The number of treatments needed varies depending on the nature and duration of the problem. A recent injury will generally heal more quickly than a long-standing problem, but typically people need between two and six sessions.

For more information about McTimoney Chiropractic please contact Brian Livingston, McTimony Chiropractor at the Lismore Clinic.

Acupuncture Treatment

acupuncture - The Lismore ClinicMs Denise Harty - The Lismore Clinic

Acupuncture is one of a number of different forms of treatment which are used by practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It has been widely used in China and the Far East for thousands of years, and is now recognized by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for its efficacy in the treatment of a wide range of clinical disorders.

Acupuncture is based on ancient principles that recognise numerous meridians (channels) in the body through which the energy (qi) of the body flows. Good health and resistance to disease depends on the smooth, efficient and unobstructed circulation of this energy within the channels.

Acupuncture treatment involves the insertion of extremely fine pre-sterilized, disposable needles at predetermined points on the body surface to influence the flow of qi and restore health. In the hands of a fully qualified professional practitioner, the use of Acupuncture is entirely safe and free of any harmful side effects. It can be very safely combined with other therapies and with orthodox medical treatment. Acupuncture can be used for a wide range of conditions including respiratory problems, high blood pressure, stress-related conditions, nerve pain and infertility.

Art Therapy

Art Therapy - The Lismore ClinicMs Lorraine Shanahan - The Lismore Clinic

Art Therapy makes use of various art materials such as paint, clay and collage to facilitate the expression and exploration of emotional issues. Through creating art and reflecting on the artwork with the support of a professional Art Therapist, people can work through emotional difficulties, which the individual may otherwise find difficult to understand or put into words.

The overall aim of Art Therapy is to enable an individual to effect change and growth on a personal level in a safe and confidential environment. Together with the client, the Art Therapist explores and reflects on the artwork and the process of creating it. The Art Therapist does not interpret the artwork, only the creator knows what the artwork means. This empowers the individual to disclose only what feels safe for them.

Art Therapy offers an alternative to other forms of psychotherapy for people who may not know what the problem is, or may find it difficult to know where to start. This may be the case for adults who have experienced problems such as bereavement or childhood abuse, or for children who are unable to understand their problems or put them into words. Art Therapy is suitable for individuals with conditions such as Asperger’s Syndrome and A.D.H.D. and is helpful for people of any age who find it difficult to express their thoughts and feelings verbally.

Art therapy is not about learning art skills or producing great works of art. No artistic ability or previous experience is required in order to benefit from the therapy, and all materials are provided by the therapist.

For more information about art therapy or to arrange a consultation, please telephone Lorraine Shanahan, Art therapist at the Lismore Clinic.

Counselling

Ms Marianne Gurnee - The Lismore Clinic

Life brings challenges to all of us and most people feel worried or depressed at some point in their lives. Although we can often work our way through problems, they can sometimes become overwhelming. Friends and family may be supportive but many people prefer not to share the intimate details of their lives with them. People may also find it difficult to talk to friends and family about personal difficulties because they are worried about being judged, hurting the other person’s feelings, or becoming a burden to them. Friends and family may try to make the person feel better by telling them that everything is ok, or that there are others who are worse off, but this doesn’t help to resolve the issue.

Counsellors and Psychotherapists are trained professionals who listen carefully to your problems, help you to see things more clearly, and support you while you find your own solutions. The Counsellor / Psychotherapist will never put you under pressure to do anything but will help you find solutions that are realistic and workable for you. The relationship between an individual and their Counsellor / Psychotherapist is confidential and is based on respect and trust: a person can talk freely and openly to a professional counsellor in a way that is seldom possible with a friend or family member.

Counselling and Psychotherapy offers the opportunity to express difficult feelings such as anger, fear, and jealousy in a safe, supportive environment. It can enable you to discover the reasons for negative feelings, help you through challenging times, and provide better coping skills for the future. Counselling and Psychotherapy can be used to address a wide range of problems such as emotional stress, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, parenting issues, grief, and abuse.

Anybody can benefit from Counselling/Psychotherapy; and asking for support does not mean there is something wrong with you. People decide to see a Counsellor/Psychotherapist
