C3-R - Corneal Collagen Crosslinking with Riboflavin

Cross-linking is a new method to treat keratoconus; it consists in producing new molecular bonds to reinforce the corneal collagen which becomes debilitated due to this condition. It is a great therapeutic alternative with excellent results and minimal side effects.

This technique consists in instilling a riboflavin drop until the cornea becomes completely impregned and then the application of UV radiation. The riboflavin creates a “filter” effect, improving the safety of this technique by not allowing UV light to enter the eye.

UV radiation, together with riboflavin, produces free radicals, which originate the corneal collagen strengthening (cross-linking).  This is a non-invasive and simple procedure which is performed in an operating room on an outpatient basis.

Cross-linking can help you postpone or avoid a corneal transplant as it helps recover the corneal stiffness, and it is specially indicated for conditions such as keratoconus, iatrogenic ectasias  and Marginal Pelucid Degeneration.  It is also used to treat other corneal conditions and some infections.

Cataract Treatment

The procedure to extract the opacified cristalline (cataract) using ultrasonic energy is called phacoemulsification. This is done through a minimum opening. In this way the patient’s recovery is immediate.

It is what we call minimally invasive surgery.

Corneal Transplant

The cornea transplant, also known as keratoplasty, consists of replacing part or the whole patient´s corneal tissue for a graft coming from a deceased donor. This procedure is done in more advanced stages of keratoconus and when the other options cannot offer any improvement.  (i.e. corneal scars, more advanced keratoconus, etc.)

LASIK

This technique is very similar to Lasik: a flap is created and the laser is applied underneath. The great difference is that the incision is made with laser (instead of a blade) which enables the surgeon to control even the minor details, and increases the predictability and safety of the flap.

Dr Enrique Barragan Garza

Job Title:
  Ophthalmologist
Specialisations:
  Eye Surgery
Languages:
  English, Spanish
Biography:

Dr. Enrique Barragan completed his medical studies at the University of Monterrey (Universidad de Monterrey) and specialized in Ophthalmology at Hospital de Especialidades N. 25 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). Later he specialized in cornea and refractive surgery under the instruction of Dr. Douglas Koch at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He then returned to Monterrey and founded the Laser Ocular Hidalgo and Okumed, from where he has been conducting highly successful private consultation. In his daily practice, Dr. Barragán specializes in laser refractive surgery and cataract. To date he has performed over 10,000 surgeries, which has helped him accumulate sufficient experience and knowledge needed to make a proper selection of patients who are good candidates for each procedure. The proper selection is critical to the success of surgery and minimizes postoperative complications.

Thanks to Laser Eye Hill, the only Intralase team in northeastern Mexico, Dr. Barragan has become one of the first ophthalmologists in Mexico who performs surgeries using this technology. In addition, he was lucky to learn the technique directly from world-renowned ophthalmologists like Dr. Stephen Slade (Houston, TX), Dr. William Boothe (Dallas, TX) and Dr. Julian Stevens (London, UK). The ethics and professionalism of his work has opened many doors in the field of ophthalmology and has therefore given him the opportunity to work with major companies conducting research protocols:

  • Bausch and Lomb-Research in surgeries with Excimer Laser (1998)
  • Staar Inc. – Intraocular Investigation of Intraocular Lenses (2000-2001)
  • Revision Optics Inc. – Presbyopia investigation (2006 -20010)
  • QLT-punctal plugs Research (2007 -2010)
  • Forsigth Labs – Cornea Researcg (2008-2010)
  • Nulens – Investigation of Accommodative Intraocular Lenses (2008-2010)
  • Technolas Perfect Vision- Investigation Presbyopia Laser Profile (2010)

Dr. Barragán collaboration in such projects has led him to be invited to give talks in conferences and symposia, both in America and Europe (Boston, San Diego, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and Stockholm).

Additionally Dr. Barragán is a member of:

  • Mexican Council of Ophthalmology
  • Mexican Society Ophthalmology
  • Ophthalmology Society of Nuevo Leon
  • American Academy of Ophthalmology
  • American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery
