An orthodontic retainer is a device used after orthodontic treatment to help maintain the position of the teeth and prevent them from shifting back. Retainers are custom-made to fit the individual patient's teeth. They are usually made of plastic or a combination of plastic and wire.There are two main types of orthodontic retainers: fixed and removable. Fixed retainers consist of a thin wire bonded to the back of the teeth, commonly on the lower front teeth. This wire is invisible from the front and is designed to remain in place for several years or even permanently. Removable retainers can be taken out by the patient for cleaning and eating. They are usually made of clear plastic or acrylic and fit over the teeth like a mouthguard. Patients will be instructed to wear their removable retainers day or night, depending on the recommendation of their orthodontist. Orthodontic retainers are an important part of orthodontic treatment as they maintain the results achieved by braces or other orthodontic appliances. Patients must follow the instructions of their orthodontist regarding the wear and care of their retainers to prevent the teeth from shifting and the need for additional orthodontic treatment.
