What are fillings?

Fillings or dental fillings are used to repair the damaged surfaces of teeth. The surface of teeth may be damaged by small fractures, damaged enamel or decay. It takes 25 to 90 minutes to place a filling in a tooth.

What different types of fillingsare there?

Dental fillings are made of gold, silver, mercury or amalgam, porcelain or ceramic, plastic, composite resin materials or a glass and acrylic mixture called glass inomer.

Is getting a filling painful?

Preparing the tooth to place a filling by removing the decayed portion using a dental drill should not be painful. Some patients find the preparation procedure uncomfortable and painful. The dentist will administer a local anaesthic to ensure that the patient does not feel pain during the procedure.

How long does recovery after fillings are placed take?

Patients may experience pain or sensitivity for a few weeks after a filling is placed. The area where the anaesthetic was injected will feel sore for a few days. The gums of the patient will also feel sore for a few days.

How do I care for my teeth after fillings are placed?

Patients should not eat for at least three hours till the anaesthesia wears off. They should not eat or drink anything that is too hot or too cold for a few days. They should avoid very hard food. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should follow correct dental hygiene and brush and floss their teeth regularly.

What are the alternatives to placing fillings?

Alternatives to dental fillings are dental crowns, inlays or onlays, or tooth remineralization.

He has helped me in so many ways to overcome my fears and complexes in relation to my teethCathJay, UK, 15 08 24

I went to see Dr Nikolaos Kasiteridis at Forest and Ray as I was having complex problems with some upper teeth, including a front tooth, a difficult situation for anyone! I am extremely grateful to Dr Nikolaos who was a marvel; he went the extra mile for me as a dentist who wants the best possible outcome for his patient’s health, at the same time incorporating high technical ability with cosmetic expertise. I can safely say that Dr Nikolaos excels in all these areas, his wealth of experience and long service to the practice speak for themselves, and he is a real professional. He digs deep to do the best he can with any of your dental problems. He has helped me in so many ways to overcome my fears and complexes in relation to my teeth. I’m aware that I can be a difficult and fussy patient to deal with and Dr Nikolaos has managed to help with my issues in a calm and professional manner. So, if you are thinking of a dentist who incorporates technical excellence with integrity, and also extremely importantly, a sympathetic response to difficulties that can seem overwhelming, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr Nikolaos and his excellent team. You will find that all their suggestions for your treatment are based on a genuine desire to help you in every possible way, as I did!

A tooth filling is a basic reconstructive dental procedure. The most basic unit of conservative dentistry, tooth fillings, is a dental procedure that everyone has heard about. Around 75-80% of adults have tooth fillings, so it is the most popular and well-known method of trying to preserve teeth and heal them back to functionality. They are used before problems with the teeth become severe but when intervention is already needed. They basically seal off the damaged tooth and repair it so that it can be used again without fear of further damage. Dental fillings can become necessary despite a vigorous at-home oral hygiene routine. Composite fillings are tiny pieces of composite resin that are inserted into a cavity on a tooth to seal it off later and to prevent the tooth enamel from decaying further. Getting a dental filling takes about half an hour to about an hour and a half, depending on how damaged the tooth is, where the cavity is, and how easy it is to get to. Amalgam fillings are bad news because they can cause brain damage and cancer and can constantly weaken the immune system slightly, thus making you overall more prone to infections and less able to fight off microbes and infections. The fillings we use instead are made of a composite artificial resin. This material hardens and sticks to teeth, does not lose weight like amalgam fillings, and does not leach mercury.

SmileUp Dental - Dental Clinic in the UK

SmileUp Dental

7 Lewisham Road, London, SE13 7QS
At Smile Up you’ll find a warm welcome from people who want to really get to know you, and a full range of dental treatments including excellent orthodontic options which are provided by our principal dentist Ricky. (If you look carefully you’ll see that most of the team are actually wearing braces by him.) We’ve got all sorts of state of the art equipment on site too that helps us deliver a really high standard of clinical outcomes. You’ll see that we’ve divided our treatments into general dentistry, advanced dentistry and cosmetic, so if you were looking for information about a specific treatment it should be easy to find. But please don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and give us a ring if you prefer, we’d love to talk to you. We’re proud of the fact that our team collectively speaks seven languages apart from English, so if you were feeling shy or nervous about communicating with us, don’t be, we can probably arrange for someone fluent in your language to give you a call back. We think great communication is a deal breaker when it comes to really good patient care in dentistry — the way we see it, we’re treating a person, not just a set of teeth.

By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, afilling also helps prevent further decay. Materials used for fillings include gold, porcelain, a composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), and an amalgam (an alloy of mercury, silver, copper, tin and sometimes zinc).
White Filling £95 - £135
White fillings are exactly what the name implies and the only real option if you want your teeth to retain a natural look once filled.
