What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is performed for dental procedures for anxious patients by administering medications to help them relax. Many patients avoid getting the required dental help because of their fear of the dentist. Sedation dentistry is performed to ensure that nervous patients enjoy healthy mouths and teeth.

What are the types of dental sedation?

The different types of dental sedation are; inhalation sedation, for patients requiring mild sedation also called anxiolysis; oral sedation, by asking patients to swallow a pill; TENS, using electrical impulses to numb the area; topical anaesthesia, using a swab to numb the area; or intra-venous sedation, for patients requiring moderate sedation and general anaesthesia for patients requiring deep sedation. General anaesthesia is used for patients only in a hospital and not in a dentist chair.

Is Sedation Dentistry painful?

Oral sedation, inhalation sedation, TENS and topical sedation are not painful. Intra-venous sedation and general anaesthesia need to be injected and patients may feel pain when the sedative is injected.

When can I travel by air after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should travel by air two days after sedation dentistry. They should take the advice of their dentist before embarking on their journey.

How long does recovery after Sedation Dentistry take?

Recovery from dental sedation takes between 40 to 90 minutes. Recovery depends on the type of sedation administered.

What after care is required after Sedation Dentistry?

Patients should rest for at least three hours after sedation dentistry. They should not eat for at least four hours, until the anaesthesia wears off. They should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should resume work at least one day after sedation dentistry. They should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least two days after sedation dentistry. They should follow all dietary prescriptions given by their dentist correctly.

Great experience so farIrina, UK, 18 03 23

Great experience so far. Doctor Paul W was very pleasant and professional, explaining very clearly what options I have and what the next steps are.

Intravenous Sedation (Per Session) from £225
Sedation Dentistry successfully uses medication to put the nervous patient in a very relaxed, dreamlike state, while their surgery or treatment is carried out. This means you will not feel the stress and anxiety that some people suffer from when they visit the dentist.  With this method, even though you will not experience feelings of nervousness or anxiety, will still be able to understand and respond to requests from your dentist - this is important to make sure you remain comfortable, and also for the dentist to ask any questions if necessary. However the effect of the medications means you may not remember much (or anything at all) about what went on during treatment. This is perfectly normal, and you can ask your dentist or nurse to explain any details to you afterwards, if you so wish.  Dr Paul Wilson and Dr Jim Toms both have qualifications from the society for advancement in sedation in dentistry (SAAD). The type of sedation we offer at Stoke Bishop Dental is intravenous conscious sedation (also know as IV sedation)
Second Opnion/ dentist consultation £49 - £50
Here at Stoke Bishop Dental Centre we are happy to give you a advice on a specific concern you have. This isn't a full examination, the dentist will look at the problematic area only and give you advice. A dental x-ray will most likely be needed to enable us to give you as much information as possible.
Dental Implants
Dental Implant including crown from £2494
If you have several missing teeth, you may not need an implant root for every missing tooth. This simplifies treatment and reduces the cost considerably. For example, if you are missing four front teeth, these can be replaced by placing just two implant roots and these can be used to support a block, or bridge of four teeth. You can also have full arch implants inserted.
