What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

Overall I was very happy with the treatment and I think it was good valueThomas, UK, 22 09 21

I was really happy with my treatment at Deltadent. The dentist and assistant thoroughly examined and discussed my problem (two broken teeth) and took me through the options available for treatment, explaining the full context and the likely consequences over time of doing the treatment. I got two dental onlays, which were a cheaper and less invasive solution than dental crowns. Friendly and professional manner. Overall I was very happy with the treatment and I think it was good value. I would certainly go to Deltadent again.

If all the permanent teeth already come through ( around 14 years old), the main growth of the jaw is usually completed. It is no longer possible to carry out any further growth correction and the main focus is on the correction of the malpositioned teeth. "fixed braces", i.e brackets permanently fixed to the teeth and connected with each other via a wire; with tooth movement being achieved by the pull of the wire on the bracket.

The boom in cosmetic dentistry is prompting more adults to consider wearing braces to straighten their teeth, something once thought of as a rite of passage for teens. So if you think youre too old for braces, think again. Some adults are even opting to get braces at the same time their children do! What are the types of braces available for adults? Fixed braces-the traditional kind that attach to teeth- generally require 9 to 30 months to work, no matter what your age. After the braces are removed, both adults and young people will have to wear a retainer-a removable appliance that keeps teeth from shifting into their previous positions-for about three months, every day, and then only at night for a long period of time. While the stigma of wearing braces as an adult has all but disappeared, most people prefer not to show a mouth full of metal when they smile. Fortunately, cosmetic options such as ceramic or "tooth-colored" braces; lingual braces that fit behind the teeth; and "clear," removable "braces" such as Invisalign®, are available. Ffixed braces generally have to be adjusted every five to eight weeks, depending on the stage of treatment. Invisalign®, which consists of a series of removable clear trays, generally requires fewer and shorter doctors visits. Now available for teens too: Invisalign Teen.
