What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

I used to hate and fear to go to the dentist but not anymorePaul, South Africa, 23 05 19

I chose this clinic because they are very holistic. I had an oral hygienist appointment with Emma followed by a filling done by Dr Ivonne Meyer. Emma is so passionate about her cleaning that it makes the whole experience fun and painless. The hour appointment flew by very quickly. Then my crown prep with Dr Meyer turned into a composite filling as they are such a conservative practice that they damage as little of the remaining tooth structure as possible. They were right about gentle dentistry; because I actually fell asleep in the chair while my filling was being done. I used to hate and fear to go to the dentist but not anymore.

The root canal treatment is necessary when a tooth is seirously decayed or becomes infected. With the root canal treatment we can rescue your teeth. The tooth root is placed in the jaw bones. In the root there is 1-1 channel rarely 2. Before starting the treatment it is necessary to take an X- Ray. We will use local anesthesia. During the treatment we remove the infected tooth material and scrape out the root channel. Then it is sterilized and cleaned. Then we close the rootchannel with permanently or temporary filling.

Endodontic Dentistry is related to the field of dentistry related with tooth pulp and pulp problems. Damage to teeth, such as cracks or deep cavities, can reach down to the nerve tissue and blood vessels residing in the soft pulp of the tooth. Damage to the pulp can lead to painful swelling, damage to the jaw bones or muscles, and the formation of abscesses. If left unchecked, this could lead to loss of tooth or tooth removal. Damaged pulp once led to the removal of the tooth. With today's advancement, however, dentists use a procedure called a root canal to restore and protect the tooth's nerves and blood vessels hence saving the tooth. Benefits: removal of bacterial infection from tooth, removal of pain, prevention of further spread of infection throughout tooth to periapical tissue and surrounding bone. Procedure: A canal is made in tooth to allow for removal of the damaged pulp, root canal may be cleaned once or several times to ensure infection is cleared, in some cases, medications may be placed to prevent infection by removing germs from the teeth. After root canal is check and cleared, the root canal is filled. The tooth tends to be fragile after root canal treatment has been done, a post and core build-up followed by a crown is usually done placed over the root canal treated teeth to provide extra strength and protection

Implant dentistry is a revolution in tooth replacement. In this system we replace a tooth for tooth and this makes it the most advanced and most popular system of fixed dental prosthesis. And much to your relief it is a relatively painless and simple procedure. Dental implantsare placed in place of a missing tooth or teeth directly into the bone. Over it are attached the prosthetic dentures or crowns. So the main advantage of an implant is that it tricks the bone into thinking that there is a tooth presentand thus by transmitting chewing or masticatory forces to the jaw it stimulates the bone and thus it is said to improve bone density. Your overall appearance definitely improves remarkably and you start looking and feeling much younger than your actual age because implants not only correct the lost bone mass of your jaw but also correct wrinkles, drooping chin, thin lips and more importantly removes that sulky old look. You start feeling a lot more healthier because your diet improves dramatically. Oral health also improves as you can floss and brush normally as natural teeth.
