What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, tooth coloured coverings also known as porcelain laminates used to cover the front of the tooth. They are placed to improve the appearance of smiles by changing the colour, length or size of teeth. The porcelain used to make the veneers is of a high quality and is generally long lasting.

What is the difference between Porcelain Veneers and Dental Crowns?

Porcelain veneers are only used to cosmetically correct the appearance of smiles. They only cover the front portion of the tooth. Dental crowns cover the entire tooth and are used to cover damaged teeth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants. Crowns are thicker than veneers. The patient’s tooth structure does not need much reduction for the placement of a porcelain veneer. A major portion of the tooth structure has to be reduced before the placement of a crown.

How long do Porcelain Veneers last?

Porcelain veneers last between 10 and 20 years. Patients need to follow the dental maintenance care instructions strictly to ensure that their porcelain veneers don’t wear out or chip. Porcelain veneers are the strongest and costliest type of veneer.

Is it painful getting Porcelain Veneers?

The dentist will administer a local anaesthetic before placing porcelain veneers. This is because the teeth of some patients are more sensitive than others. Since very little tooth structure is reduced for placing veneers, patients will not feel pain after veneers are placed. Some patients may feel a little soreness or sensitivity for a few days after the anaesthesia wears off.

The building of good relationships / friendships with our patients Continuing enhancement of our own dental knowledge and skills. From the age of about 6 months to 12 years, we have a set of baby or deciduous teeth. Whilst they are only temporary, it is still important to to maintain them as clean and well aligned as possible. Children can be brought in to see the dentist as early as 3 years old. At these early appointments, the goal isn't to "fix" or do anything major but to introduce the child to the first steps in dental care. Counting of teeth and perhaps a simple polishing could also be done During the teenage years and beyond, fixed braces can be used to straighten any crooked teeth and align the bite correctly. Adults can also straighten their teeth with fixed braces but it will take longer to correct the problems. The use of transparent brackets help to improve aesthetics during treatment.
