I received my dental degree at the University of Mexico in 1973, and my orthodontic degree at the same university in 1978. I have been practicing orthodontics exclusively in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico for over twenty-seven years. I am a Member of several orthodontic Organizations in Mexico: Orthodontic Association of Baja California, the Northwest Mexico Orthodontic Association, Orthodontic Mexican Association and the Orthodontic Mexican Board. In the United States of America: American Association of Orthodontists and the World Federation Orthodontists. Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that corrects malformation of the maxilla and mandible (upper and lower dental bones) and the irregular position of the teeth. By orthodontic treatment not only are the teeth aligned, but both dental arches, upper and lower, are correctly developed to achieve a good function of the teeth. The goal of orthodontic treatment is to create harmony and balance between teeth and lower third of the face and to enhance a nice smile. This improves occlusion, allowing better mastication, and thus improving digestion. Successful orthodontic treatment can also help the patient look and feel better and improves self-esteem There are three elements that work in equilibrium when we chew: our teeth, muscles and joints. They need to work in harmony, which will be the final result of our orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic treatment can be done at any age, but faster results will be achieved with children because of the advantage of rapid growth of the facial bones. (deleted the sentence) Teeth can be carefully guided to improve the position of the teeth and coordinate both dental arches, or to prepare the position of teeth for appropriate dental reconstruction. Orthodontic treatment in both children and adults requires that teeth and gums be restored to good health before treatment is begun. Orthodontics treatment takes time because the teeth grow into a new position within the bone and this gentle movement is slow. There is usually some discomfort at the beginning of the treatment and two days after every adjustment. It is very important for the patient to have good dental hygiene and keep his braces thoroughly clean. Poor hygiene can allow inflammation of gums and decalcification of the enamel. Before initiation of the treatment it is important to do a complete diagnosis. This diagnosis will be used to determine what has to be done in order to result in a successful treatment.
