In gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen and can bleed easily. Thisform of gum disease does not include any loss of bone and tissue that holdteeth in place. When gingivitisis not treated, it can advance to “periodontitis” (which means “inflammationaround the tooth”). In periodontitis, gums pull away from the teeth and formspaces (called “pockets”) that become infected. The body’s immune system fightsthe bacteria as the plaque spreads and grows below the gum line. Bacterialtoxins and the body’s natural response to infection start to break down thebone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. If not treated, the bones,gums, and tissue that support the teeth are destroyed. The teeth may eventuallybecome loose and have to be removed. The main goal of treatment is to control the infection. Dental Radiographs are commonly called Dental x-rays. Dentists use radiographs for many reasons: to find hidden dental structures, malignant or benign masses, bone loss, and cavities.  A radiographic image is formed by a controlled burst of X-ray radiation which penetrates oral structures at different levels, depending on varying anatomical densities,before striking the film or sensor. Teeth appear lighter because less radiation penetrates them to reach the film.   Infections and other changes in the bone density appear darker because X rays readily penetrate these less dense Structures.  Dental restorations (fillings, crowns) may appear lighter or darker, depending on the density of the material.

What are wisdom teeth?These are the most back teeth in your jaws.
