Graduated in 1987 as a dentist down at the KULeuven. Then studied periodontics at Lund Universitet in Malmö. In 1990 he became Master of Dental Science in the field of Peridontology (MSc). Obtained in 1992 his doctorate (Odont. Dr.) after defending a thesis regarding supragingival biofilm control. In 1995 Lecturer (Associate Professor in the field of Periodontology) at the Center for Oral Health Sciences, Malmo University. Has worked since 1992 as a periodontist, first in Brussels (until 2004) and then as founder of the Center Periodontology and Implantology in Leuven. Is a member of the Belgian Society of Periodontology, European Federation of Periodontology, American Academy of Periodontology, Academy of Osseointegration and European Association of Osseointegration. Is chairman of the Dutch Chamber Accreditation commission of Periodontology FPS Public Health (2009-2015). Accompanies as trainer since 2007 training periodontists from the University of Leuven and Ghent University. As co-promoter he supports masters in dentistry and speech sciences. His research activities cover supragingival plaque control, dentinegevoeligheid, mouthwashes, patients opinion after implant treatment, antibiotic use, patient response to aftercare, smoking and implant failure, rapid and immediate implant loading, long-term monitoring of implants, creating and solving voice discomfort after prosthetic restoration, using 3D cone beam CT technology, etc. it carries out this research in collaboration with universities in Leuven, Ghent, Copenhagen, Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm.
