Temporomandibular joints are treated by prescribing pain killers, anti-inflammatory medications or anti-depressants. Dentists also fit mouth guards or oral splints to treat temporomandibular disorders. Ultrasound treatments and placing heat and ice packs are also recommended.  Minimally invasive procedures to remove fluid or other debris are performed. Steroids or neuromuscular relaxant injections are administered to treat disorders. Surgical procedures are performed if the disorder is not resolved using other procedures. TMJ - Temporomandibular Joint Treatment
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders are a family of problems related to your jaw joints which are very complex structures. If you have had symptoms like pain or a "clicking" sound, you'll be glad to know that these problems are more easily diagnosed and treated than they were in the past. These symptoms occur when the jaw joints and the chewing muscles (muscles of mastication) do not work together correctly. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the name for each joint (right and left) that connects your jaw to your skull. Since some types of TMJ problems can lead to more serious conditions, early detection and treatment are important.
Dental Implants
First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are left buried beneath the surface of the gums gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. After the implant has bonded to the jawbone, the second phase begins. Dr. Bowler will uncover the implants and attach small posts, which will act as anchors for the artificial teeth. These posts protrude through the gums. When the artificial teeth are placed these posts will usually not be seen. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months. Most patients experience minimal disruption in their daily life.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
In most cases, the removal of wisdom teeth is performed under general anesthesia in hospital, however for suitable cases the procedure can be carried out under local anaesthesia with or without sedation in Dr. Bowler’s rooms. These options, as well as the surgical risks (i.e. sensory nerve damage, sinus complications etc.) will be discussed with you before the procedure is performed.
