Dr Cheng is a fully qualified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon and fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is also a member of The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He specialises in both the cosmetic and reconstructive aspects of plastic surgery.
After graduating with a medical degree from the University of Queensland, Dr Cheng completed a 3 year residency at the Royal Brisbane & Womens Hospital. He then spent 4 years of training in general surgery. In order to pursue his interest and passion in plastic surgery, he completed an additional 4 years of specialised training in plastic & reconstructive surgery in both Brisbane and Melbourne. Upon becoming a fellow of The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, he obtained further experience in Canada and Taiwan in the areas of cosmetic surgery and microsurgery.
In addition to his private practice at Aesthetic & Reconstructive Plastic Surgery Clinic, The Wesley Hospital, Dr Cheng also works as a consultant plastic surgeon at the Royal Brisbane & Womens Hospital.
Dr Cheng is passionate about clinical teaching and holds a clinical lecturer position with the University of Queensland. He performs regular clinical teaching to junior doctors, nursing and allied health staff at the Royal Brisbane & Womens Hospital and The Wesley Hospital in Auchenflower. As a testimony of his passion for teaching he was awarded the Glaxo Smith Kline Registrar Award for Medical Education in 2001 and was nominated for the University of Queensland Mervyn Neely Award for Excellence in Surgical Teaching in 2004. He is also an active instructor with the Australia and New Zealand Burns Association for their Early Management of Severe Burns Course.
Apart from his clinical activity, Dr Cheng has also been highly productive in clinical research. He has received multiple grants to complete research projects and subsequently published numerous scientific articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. He has also presented his research at various national and international conferences and in 2004 he was awarded with the Stryker Leibinger Travelling Fellowship, for the best clinical paper at the 2004 Annual Plastic Surgical Registrar Meeting in Wellington, New Zealand. In 2005, he was awarded the Smith & Nephew Travelling Fellowship to the European Burn Association Congress for the best clinical paper.
