My only family member to have practiced medicine was a maternal grandfather, who devoted much of his clinical practice to investigating the positive and negative effects of radiotherapy on the body. My mother commenced studying medicine at the University of Sydney but subsequently found her calling in archaeology, while my father was a professor of organic chemistry at the University of NSW. As such I was brought up in an academic household with an interest in science, languages and the arts.
