Intense Pulsed Light is a safe, effective and non-invasive method for removing thread veins. Unlike other methods such as sclerotherapy, there is no downtime when using Intense Pulsed Light to remove thread veins and treatments can be as quick as 15 to 20 minutes. The Ecolite Intense Pulsed Light system used at PureLite emits a powerful yellow light which is absorbed by the blood in the veins. A heat reaction occurs which breaks down the protein in the vessel walls destroying the veins, and the debris is then removed by the bodys natural waste disposal system. After a few sessions the appearance of thread/spider veins will be dramatically reduced or totally removed, dependent on the veins and the treatment area.

Thread/spider veins are small, thin capillaries that lie close to the surface of the skin. They are usually red in colour but can also be purple/blue. Thread/spider veins are not to be confused with varicose veins which are swollen and enlarged veins that have a lumpy appearance. Thread veins consist of a branch of veins, whereas spider veins are more like a cluster of veins. Thread/spider veins are connected to a larger venous system but are not an essential part of it as they do not carry blood to the heart. They are formed when excess blood backs up in the blood stream creating pressure; this pressure is released when the new veins are created just below the skins surface.

The actual cause of acne is the body’s increased production of the hormone androgen, a hormone produced by both men and women. The androgen hormone stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil causing the pores in the skin to become blocked preventing the oil from coming up to the surface of the skin. Acne, an infection caused by skin bacteria, directly feeds on and breaks down the trapped oil in the skin. As the bacteria increase, waste products and sebatic acid are created, and the sebaceous glands become inflamed – causing blackheads, whiteheads or pimples.

How does Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) work?

The IPL specialist administers a flash-lamp which produces a carefully filtered light. The system is designed to ensure that only the right wavelengths reach the skin for the reduction of age spots, visible blood vessels, uneven pigmentation and redness. The particular light that is allowed to reach the skin has been selected because it elicits two natural body substances, specifically melanin (which is in age spots) and haemoglobin (which is in blood vessels). When the pre-programmed wavelengths reach the melanin or haemoglobin, the heat from the light destroys them with a flash.
