Gastric BalloonThe Gastric Balloon is a simple gastric surgery device, fitted inside the stomach, to create short term and rapid weight loss. It is a soft, expandable, silicone balloon that is placed inside the stomach via a camera that enters through the mouth and into the stomach. Once inserted in the stomach, the empty balloon is filled with a sterile saline solution.
A gastric balloon aims to reduce feelings of hunger and help you feel fuller for longer after eating only small meals. Also known as an intra gastric balloon, this type of weight loss treatment can help you lose weight without invasive surgery.
Gastric balloons are inserted under sedation in a procedure which takes 20 to 30 minutes. It is performed in an endoscopic room, not an operating room. The surgeon is assisted by anesthesiologist, surgical nurses, assistant surgeon, just as if the having the procedure done in an operating room. It is a relatively minor procedure, but it may take your stomach a little while to get used to the balloon. You will usually be able to go home the same day, or the day after the balloon has been inserted.
Duration times includes placement of the implant (gastric balloon), and recovery time. This is an OUTPATIENT procedure.
This procedure is NOT RECOMMENDED for patients who suffer of gastro-esophageal reflux (acid reflux), severe gastritis or gastric ulcer.
