What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

Root canals
Each of our teeth contains a long, thin strand of dental pulp—which provides the tooth with nutrients and nerves—that extends down to the tooth’s root. If the pulp becomes infected or injured, the tooth’s nerves die and, often, without endodontic treatment, the tooth dies as well. Root canals are designed to save such damaged teeth. During the procedure, a gap is drilled into the tooth’s crown and pulp chamber, diseased pulp is reshaped or removed, and the tooth is permanently sealed with a gold, porcelain, or tooth-colored inlay/onlay or crown.

Very knowledgeable, patient, and kindFreny, Canada, 12 09 22

I have been going to Dr Raju Sarna for many years now, and Dr Sarna and his team are excellent. I recently was referred to an Endodontist who looked at my "crowns" and stated "whoever your dentist is who did your crowns has done an excellent job" (and yes, they were done more than 10 years back by none other than my Dr Sarna). Very knowledgeable, patient, and kind and I have the highest regard for Dr Sarna. A special "shout out" to one of their hygienists, Heidi as well. Highly recommend Dr Sarna and his clinic.

Root canals
Root canal therapy is needed when the tooths nerve is affected by decay or infection. To save the tooth, the living tissue inside the tooth (pulp) and decay are removed. The subsequent space is filled with a special medicated material that will help restore the tooth to its full original function. Root canal treatments are highly successful and usually last a lifetime. However, a tooth may occasionally have to be re-treated due to new infections. Some cases may be referred to an endodontic specialist for treatment.

Dental Implants
Using dental implants and state-of-the-art technology, our dentists will help you regain your ability to eat comfortably and smile confidently again. Implants enable us to replace missing teeth, providing a fixed solution to removable, partial or complete dentures. The implant procedure requires several visits over a number of months. Titanium posts are surgically placed into the jaw bone, acting as an artificial root. After the implant has integrated itself onto the bone, a natural-looking artificial tooth is then fitted to the post, providing a strong, stable, and durable solution that will last several years, with only occasional re-tightening or replacement. Reasons for dental implants include:• Replacing one or more missing teeth without effecting adjacent teeth • Resolving join pain or bite problems caused by teeth shifting into missing tooth space • Support a bridge or denture, making them more secure and comfortable • Restoring a patients chewing and speech abilities, facial support, as well as a confident smile
