I am a person centred counsellor who believes that every human being has an innate tendency to develop towards their full potential. This can be blocked or distorted by our life experiences, in particular those who tell us we are only loved or valued if we behave in certain ways, or have certain feelings. As a result, because we have a deep need to feel valued, we may distort or deny our inner experiences that we believe will not be acceptable.
The counsellor works to understand the client’s experience from the client’s point of view. However, the aim of the therapy depends on the client’s needs. Loneliness, body image, low self esteem, bereavement, anger, frustration, sexual orientation, lack of meaning, stress, and depression could become potential issues to explore.
Individual therapy (sometimes called “psychotherapy” or “counselling”) is a process through which clients work one-on-one with a trained therapist—in a safe, caring, and confidential environment—to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviours, work through challenging or influential memories, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to change, better understand themselves and others, set personal goals, and work toward desired change.
People seek therapy for a wide variety of reasons, from coping with major life challenges or childhood trauma, to dealing with depression or anxiety, to simply desiring personal growth and greater self-knowledge. A client and therapist may work together for as few as five or six sessions or as long as several years, depending on the client’s unique needs and personal goals for therapy.
